A deployment set up to be measured for two years rather than described once: the tractor, the pump it powers and the ground it prepares, all instrumented from the start.

What has been supplied

A community project in western Zambia has been supplied with an AFT-e1 electric micro tractor, charged from the grid, a DC water pump attachment for irrigation, and a rotovator for seedbed preparation.

Three things rather than one, and deliberately so: the ground has to be prepared, the crop has to be watered, and both have to run off the same battery and the same charge. A tractor on its own would answer only the first of those.

Instrumented from the start

The telemetry hardware on the tractor and on the DC pump will accommodate a full two-year monitoring window.

That is the part worth saying plainly. Most of what is written about machines like this is written in the first month, when everything is new and nothing has worn out. Two years of data covers two full seasons, the dry and the wet, and whatever goes wrong in between.
