Inside a polytunnel, four narrow beds of basil and chard running the length of the tunnel with drip lines and manifolds along the bare soil between them

Horticulture & market gardens

A market garden is worked in narrow beds, over and over, and a good deal of that work happens under cover. That is where mechanisation usually stops: a combustion engine run inside a polytunnel fills it with exhaust long before the job is finished, so the tunnels get done by hand while the machine sits outside.

An electric machine has no exhaust to get rid of, so the constraint disappears. The AFT-e1 is 0.75 m wide at the handlebars on a 0.68 m track, which is a bed width rather than a field width — at Meanwood Valley Urban Farm in Leeds the market garden runs a hundred and ten beds, every one of them 75 cm, and the tooling drops straight in with no change to a layout the garden already runs.

The tools are the ordinary ones. A rotavator to burst sod and work the same ground down to a seedbed, a power ridger to form beds and cut the ditches between them, a rear tine cultivator for weeding between planted rows, and a trailer for the compost and the crates — which on most of the sites we visit is the job that actually eats the week.

Depth comes from the tool
Rotavator68 / 80 cm width · 20–25 cm depth · seedbeds
Power ridger40 cm width · 30 cm depth · bed forming and ditching
RidgerBed forming and row shaping, unpowered
Rear tine cultivatorThree rows of tines, spacing set to the crop rows

Against the alternatives

Hand toolsWhat most tunnels are worked with. No fumes, and no help with the weight.
Petrol two-wheel tractorRight width, wrong exhaust. Not usable under cover for long.
Compact tractorToo wide for a 75 cm bed, and it compacts what it drives over.
Hired contractorComes on their schedule. Rarely worth calling out for a tunnel.
Aftrak AFT-e1Bed width, no exhaust, and the same machine outside as in.
The same polytunnel in summer, grapevine trained overhead, cucumbers and staked tomatoes down one side and basil down the other, poppies in the middle
Interior of a long polytunnel with potted plants at ground level either side of a central path
Terraced vegetable beds of even width running across a valley slope, irrigation line snaking over bare soil, polytunnel on the terrace above
Row of timber and block compost bays under sheeting, beside a polytunnel
